COUNSELING IN ABILENE, TEXAS
Fees & Insurance
Let’s make the cost of counseling clearer.
Knowing how you’ll pay is part of feeling ready to begin. Explore insurance options, see individual clinician fees, or ask our office for help understanding your next step.
Can I start counseling without a referral?
You can often contact a counselor directly. Many plans do not require a referral for routine outpatient counseling, and private-pay clients do not need an insurance referral. Some plans and programs have different rules, so we can help clarify what applies before you begin.
For example, active-duty TRICARE members generally need a referral and authorization for civilian mental-health care. Other TRICARE beneficiaries have different requirements depending on their plan and provider.
What does insurance usually cover?
Many health plans cover outpatient mental-health treatment, such as counseling for anxiety, depression and other covered conditions. Payment depends on your plan, the service, the clinician’s participation and whether treatment meets the plan’s medical-necessity requirements. A network name alone does not confirm that a particular appointment is covered.
You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis already established. Your clinician can assess your concerns. When using insurance, claims generally include a diagnosis and information about the service provided.
What will I actually pay?
Insurance terms can feel confusing. These are the main pieces that determine your share of a covered appointment.
Copay
A fixed amount for a covered appointment, such as $25 per session. Whether a deductible applies first depends on your plan.
Deductible
The amount you may need to pay toward covered care before your plan begins sharing certain costs. Some plans cover counseling with a copay before the deductible is met.
Coinsurance
Your percentage of the allowed cost. With 20% coinsurance and a $100 allowed amount, your share would be $20 after any applicable deductible.
A simple example
If a covered session’s allowed amount is $100 and you have $300 left on a deductible that applies to counseling, you may owe the $100 for that session. Once the applicable deductible is met, your plan’s copay or coinsurance rules apply.
These numbers are examples, not Clear Skies fees or a quote for your plan.
What is the allowed amount?
It is the amount your insurer recognizes for a covered service. For an in-network clinician, this is generally the negotiated rate and may differ from the advertised self-pay fee.
What about the out-of-pocket maximum?
This is your plan’s annual limit on what you pay for covered in-network services. Premiums, noncovered services and many out-of-network costs do not count toward that limit.
Can we use insurance for couples counseling?
Working on communication or strengthening a relationship is valuable, but relationship counseling alone is not automatically a covered medical benefit.
Some plans cover sessions involving a partner or family member when they are part of medically necessary treatment for a diagnosed mental-health condition. Coverage depends on the actual treatment, the plan’s benefits and the clinician’s participation. Simply having a diagnosis does not make every couples session covered.
We can help check your plan’s requirements and discuss self-pay options when insurance does not cover the service you want. Any diagnosis and billing must accurately reflect the care provided.
Let us help check your insurance benefits
You do not have to understand every insurance term before reaching out. Request help from our office, and we will guide you through the next steps.
Send a request
Open our SimplePractice inquiry form and tell us you would like a benefits check. Include the clinician you are considering, if you have someone in mind.
Share your details securely
Our office will explain how to provide your insurance card and required information through the secure client portal. Please do not send card images or member details through ordinary email.
Review estimated costs
We will help check network status and available information about deductibles, copays, coinsurance and authorization requirements, then explain what we find and anything that still needs confirmation.
Your message can be simple: “I would like to check my insurance before scheduling. I am interested in meeting with [clinician name].”
The button opens an inquiry form. This is a staff-assisted request, not an instant online eligibility result. Please mention the benefits check in your message.
A benefits check is an estimate, not a guarantee of coverage or payment. Your insurer determines the final amount when it processes the claim. Let us know if your plan changes.

Using insurance
Your cost depends on your plan and any applicable deductible, copay or coinsurance. Selecting a network identifies clinicians to consider; it does not confirm coverage.

Common payment questions
Does accepting my insurance mean every session is covered?
Coverage depends on your specific plan, the clinician and the service. Confirm your benefits and expected costs before starting. Network participation alone is not a guarantee of payment.
Where can I find session fees?
Fees are listed on individual clinician profiles. If a fee is not listed, or you have questions about the type or length of appointment, contact our office.
What if my insurance is not listed?
Ask our office about available options. You can also review clinicians’ direct-payment fees. A network missing from this directory is not a determination about your benefits.
Can I use out-of-network benefits?
Ask whether your clinician can provide the documentation your plan requires. Reimbursement depends on your plan and is not guaranteed.
Does my deductible apply to counseling?
That depends on your plan’s benefits for the service and clinician. Ask your insurer about outpatient mental-health coverage, any applicable remaining deductible, and your copay or coinsurance.
Where should I send insurance information?
Ask our office how to submit it through the secure client portal. Please do not send insurance card images or member details through ordinary email.
