Counseling in Abilene, Texas

ADHD & Executive Functioning

When knowing what to do is not the same as being able to do it.

You know what needs doing, yet getting started, keeping track, or finishing can take more effort than others seem to notice. Being told to try harder has not helped.

When this feels familiar

Trying harder may not answer the question you have.

You might want support that takes your actual routines, attention, and responsibilities seriously instead of offering another system you cannot sustain.

When starting takes more energy than the task.

A project can stay on your mind all day without getting underway. You may feel frustrated by the distance between your intentions and what happens when it is time to act.

When everyday demands keep piling up.

Appointments, messages, and unfinished tasks can compete for attention. You might be tired of explaining missed details or dealing with the self-criticism that follows them.

Working together

Work with the way your everyday life actually unfolds.

Start with your experience, then choose goals and an approach that fit your circumstances.

Look closely at one recurring difficulty.

Bring a routine or task that regularly becomes hard. Explore the demands around it, the points where you get stuck, and what has or has not helped before.

Consider supports that fit your circumstances.

Discuss ways of approaching planning, follow-through, communication, or emotional reactions. The aim is to find something workable for your life rather than make you fit a particular productivity system.

Clarify what kind of help you need.

Ask whether counseling, assessment, accommodations, or other care fits your goals. A counseling appointment does not automatically include diagnostic testing or medication management.

Your first conversation

You don’t need to explain it perfectly.

You might begin with:

“I know what needs doing. I just can’t seem to make it happen consistently.”

You can bring a specific example from home, school, or work. Ask about the clinician’s experience with your age group and whether their services fit the kind of support you are seeking.

You can ask about the clinician’s approach and share what would help you feel more comfortable talking. You do not need a prepared speech or a complete history ready to tell.

Help me find a clinician

Before you reach out

A few things you might be wondering.

Does counseling include an ADHD assessment?

Not automatically. Ask explicitly about diagnostic evaluation and testing, which may require a separate service or referral.

Can I ask for help without an ADHD diagnosis?

Yes. Describe the attention or follow-through difficulties you want help with. A clinician can discuss assessment and suitable support.

Do you work with both children and adults?

Ages served vary by clinician. Check the individual profile and confirm fit with the office before scheduling.

Can sessions focus on practical everyday difficulties?

You can bring examples such as starting tasks, managing transitions, remembering commitments, or navigating school and work demands. Ask about the clinician’s experience with your age group and clarify whether you want counseling support or a formal assessment.

Can I meet online or use insurance?

Appointment formats and insurance networks vary by clinician. Review the individual profile, then ask the office to confirm availability, current fees, and your plan’s benefits before you begin.

What if I’m not sure which clinician to choose?

Contact the office with a little information about what you are looking for. You can ask about relevant experience, ages served, appointment formats, and payment options.
