Anxiety is part of life and a normal response to stressors that arise. However, increased levels of anxiety can become an issue when it begins to impact daily functioning.

We have all felt stressed or anxious at some point in our lives. Perhaps you feel anxiety when speaking in front of others, going to a new place such as a gym, or writing a blog for everyone to see.

According to the APA, “anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure.” It is usually a normal response that goes away once the stressor is removed.

However, people with an anxiety disorder usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns indicated by excessive anxiety and worry. Oftentimes, the worry is out of proportion to the actual likelihood that something bad could occur and they may not be able to identify the source of their anxiety. This may significantly interfere with their everyday life.
