Understanding Suicide Prevention: How to Support Those in Crisis

Recognizing the Signs, Supporting Others, and Ending the Silence Around Suicide

September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, a time to shed light on one of the most urgent yet often unspoken public health issues of our time. At Clear Skies Counseling, we believe that community, compassion, and education are vital tools in supporting those in crisis. This month is not only about raising awareness but also about empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to recognize the warning signs of suicide, offer meaningful support, and help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health concerns.

Suicide affects individuals and families from all walks of life. It is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and yet many who struggle with suicidal thoughts do so in silence. Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month serves as a call to action for all of us to learn how to recognize the signs of someone in crisis and respond with empathy, connection, and hope.

Recognizing the warning signs of suicide is one of the most powerful ways we can intervene before a crisis escalates. These signs are not always easy to spot and can vary widely from person to person. However, some of the more common indicators include talking about wanting to die, expressing feelings of hopelessness or having no reason to live, and withdrawing from friends, family, and social activities. Other red flags may involve increased use of alcohol or drugs, drastic mood swings, giving away prized possessions, or making final arrangements such as writing a will.

It is important to understand that while these behaviors do not guarantee that someone will attempt suicide, they are serious signals that someone may be experiencing overwhelming emotional pain. When we take the time to notice and respond to these warning signs, we can help create space for conversation, healing, and support.

If you notice any of these signs in someone you care about (see more on Depression), there are compassionate ways to offer support. First and foremost, reach out. A simple “How are you doing?” or “I’ve noticed you’ve seemed a bit off lately. Want to talk?” can open the door to a deeper conversation. When someone does share what they are going through, listen without judgment. Avoid offering immediate solutions or minimizing their experience. Just being present and hearing them out can make a tremendous difference.

Once someone feels heard, you can gently encourage them to seek help from a mental health professional. Offer to help them find a therapist or accompany them to an appointment if they are open to it. Follow up regularly, especially if they appear to isolate themselves more. Showing ongoing support can be a crucial lifeline. It is also helpful to know the emergency numbers in your area. In the United States, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by dialing 988. If someone is in immediate danger, do not hesitate to contact emergency services.

Therapy plays a critical role in suicide prevention. At Clear Skies Counseling, we offer therapeutic services tailored to support individuals who are experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional distress. Therapy provides a confidential and supportive environment where clients can safely explore their feelings, understand the root causes of their distress, and develop personalized coping strategies. Clinicians work with clients to build safety plans, process painful emotions, and foster a renewed sense of hope and direction.

Suicide prevention is not only about crisis intervention. It is also about fostering a culture that encourages openness about mental health and reduces the shame that often prevents people from seeking help. Many individuals avoid talking about their struggles out of fear they will be misunderstood or judged. Breaking this silence starts with each of us. By having honest conversations, sharing resources, and showing compassion, we create a safer space for people to reach out when they need it most.

This month, we encourage you to reflect on how you can be a source of support to someone in need. Whether it’s checking in with a friend, sharing a mental health resource, or talking to your own therapist, every small step matters. At Clear Skies Counseling, we are committed to being part of that step. Our therapists stand alongside individuals and families facing difficult times and offer guidance, care, and encouragement every step of the way.

If you or someone you love is struggling, please know that help is available. You are not alone. With greater awareness, open dialogue, and access to compassionate care, we can help reduce the impact of suicide and provide a path forward for healing.
